Pretty sure that when I mention Ronald McDonald you picture a red-haired character that greets you with burgers and fries. Did you know that beyond that, Ronald McDonald has also lent his name to charity?
Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Singapore is an independently administered charity incepted in 1989 on a simple mission – to directly improve the health and well-being of children in Singapore. Thanks to omy and McDonald’s, a bunch of us had a chance to meet a family that benefitted from RMHC. Joyce Leong (mummy of a child who was warded) had shared that it really helped to have a haven for her to retreat to when her child was resting or undergoing treatment. Being away from the hospital beds and in a more relaxed environment (like a chalet, she mentioned) gave her the space to be more collected, and in a better place to support her child the next time they met.
RMHC is indeed a home away from home for them. As you can see – it’s pretty well equipped! Each of the four rooms looks just like a hotel room, with the convenience of their own toilets with showers. There’s also a living room and a kitchen (where they provide families with meals as well).
This year, McDonald’s Singapore joins a global movement to celebrate RMHC’s 40th Anniversary. Join us in 3 ways:
1. Purchase your stripes
From 15 October to 28 October, you can make a donation to the charity by purchasing a pair of red and white striped socks via Groupon. Members of the public can choose to purchase this at $10, $20 or $50.
psst…you also get a free Strawberry Sundae treat with every pair of socks purchased.
2. Show off your stripes
Help the charity spread the word by dressing in red and white stripes, donning on the socks, or creating your own red-and-white themed images. Share these images along with your well wishes for these families on Instagram with #forRMHC and #RMHCSG.
3. Join us on 16 Nov for McHappy Day 2014
RMHC’s 40th anniversary celebrations will culminate on McDonald’s annual McHappy Day, on 16 November 2014. On this day, volunteers will be selling the signature socks across Singapore. Families with young children are also welcomed to join in the fun at the #forRMHC Party at Tampines Mall from 1.00pm – 5.00pm, where you can enjoy balloon sculpting, face painting for children, games and more.
So let us wear our red and white stripes to support love! You can always use a pair of new socks – perhaps for this year’s Halloween costume? Next year’s SG50 celebrations? Just to lounge around at home?
