Vatos first caught my eye from Yinkae’s Insta feed –
and after some snooping I realized it was a popular chain from Korea that has quite a cult following. I’ve always loved the fresh flavours of Mexican food + the punch of well-marinated Korean meat dishes. So off to Vatos we went.
Vatos is a little bit hard to locate – you can’t see it from the facade of the relatively new South Beach (where fancy brands like Facebook and Lego call home). Vatos is housed in “South Beach Quarter” which is an unassuming white building – let your nose lead!
Ambience-wise, Vatos has quite a raw feel to it – it’s an open kitchen and an open bar, so it feels pretty casual. Patrons ranged from friends to families.
They offer a few fun cocktails, including this Corona-rita (below) and Makgeolitas which I definitely wanna try the next time we’re back!
Umm, who doesn’t love free starters? Fresh corn tortillas served with a delicious tomatillo salsa verde and roasted onion chipotle salsa (so good) just when you get seated.
We ordered guac to start as well – I think we accidentally ordered the fresh guac and chips ($10) instead of the loaded bacon and blue cheese guac ($15) which. I do want to try. As well. #piglife.
The two must-tries were the Galbi Short Rib tacos ($12 for 2 / $17 for 3) and the mango prawn quesadilla ($22)
Flour tortilla stuffed with melted mozzarella cheese and chipotle prawn, coated with mexican cheese that’s grilled to a crisp, and topped with sour cream, avocado slices and fresh mango salad. This sounds amazing but I found it a tad too salty – expected a better balance in taste given the amazing ingredients that went into it.
The Galbi Short Rib tacos however, did NOT DISAPPOINT. The beef short rib was amazingly marinated and super tender. I’m sold on their tacos just from this dish. Defo returning to try more ko-mex fusion dishes!
